				<p>SharePoint distribueres typisk på en virksomheds netværk som en række intranet-sites, og gør det muligt for forskellige afdelinger at kontrollere adgange til deres eget site og derved begrænse adgang til deres egne filer.<br />
Som med enhver anden hjemmeside er et SharePoint-websted – eller en enkelt side på webstedet – tilgængelig via en web-adresse, som brugeren kan få adgang til ved hjælp af en webbrowser.</p>
<p>SharePoint bruges oftest til lagring af versionsstyrede dokumenter, f.eks. Word-dokumenter og Excel-regneark. I mange miljøer bruges e-mail til at sende dokumenter frem og tilbage mellem brugerne. Med den arbejdsgang er sandsynligheden for at blande forskellige versioner af samme dokument meget høj, samt opbevaring af flere kopier af det samme dokument tager mere diskplads end enkelte dokumenter. Da SharePoint giver en enkelt kilde til lagring, visning og opdatering af dokumenter, fjernes mange af disse problemer.</p>
<p>Og fordi SharePoint nemt håndterer stort set alle typer dokumenter, bruges det ofte til at konsolidere og gemme forskellige typer dokumenter (f.eks. Projekt tegninger, videoer, skemaer, fotografier og arbejdsbøger), der kræves til store projekter, hvor flere hold skal samarbejde. Det er værd at vide at Microsoft Teams bygger på SharePoint teknologi.</p>
<p>Microsoft valgte SharePoint som platform på grund af de betydelige funktioner, der er indbygget i SharePoint, herunder disse:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Sikkerhed</strong> – SharePoint understøtter brugere, og grupper af brugere. Brugere og grupper kan blive givet eller nægtet adgang til forskellige dele af et SharePoint-websted, og specifikke brugere kan få tilladelse til at tilføje, slette eller ændre webstedet.</li>
<li><strong>Versionering</strong> – SharePoint opretholder automatisk en versionshistorik for objekter og data. Ændringer kan rulles tilbage til en tidligere version hvis behovet opstår. Muligheden for at rulle versioner tilbage kan gives til individuelle brugere eller grupper.</li>
<li><strong>Papirkurv</strong> – Slettede data og objekter holdes i en “papirkurv“, så de kan genoprettes, hvis det er nødvendigt. SharePoint understøtter en fortrydelsesfunktion for dens data.</li>
<li><strong>Notifikationer</strong> – Brugere og grupper kan informeres via e-mail, når et bestemt dokument i SharePoint er tilføjet, slettet eller ændret. Når de får de rette tilladelser, kan brugerne administrere deres egne notifikationer.</li>
<li><strong>Vedligeholdelse af slutbruger</strong> – SharePoint-websteder er beregnet til at blive opretholdt af deres brugere uden indblanding af IT-afdelingen. Selvom SharePoint-sider ikke er så fleksible som typiske websider, kan en SharePoint-udvikler tilføje eller fjerne funktioner fra sider; ændre skrifttyper, overskrifter, farver og andre attributter af sider; oprette undersider og lister og udføre mange andre ændringer.</li>
<li><strong>Andre funktioner</strong> – Hvert SharePoint-websted indeholder en række funktioner, som f.eks. En kalender, en opgaveliste samt notifikationer som brugerne selv kan definere.</li>
</ul>
